Some History

The Congdon-McIntyre Building, with its unique corner entrance is a landmark of historic downtown Hibbing. In the heyday, it boasted five business spaces on the street level and numerous businesses on the upper floor - including a dental office, beauty shop, and accountant and law offices.

Constructed as a business center, the Congdon-McIntyre Building housed three "well-lighted and well-ventilated" stores and offices "equipped with all the modern conveniences" of the time. Pharmacists Congdon and McIntyre relocated their business from North Hibbing in 1921.

As this photo from Aubin Studio shows, early occupants included Sapero's Style Shop, Clover Coffee Shop, and McIntyre Pharmacy, which is where Teske's Jewelry was located. Teske's moved into the corner space in the late 1930s and owned the building from the late 1960s until today.

Today

It's worth a look!

Today, the Congdon McIntyre building has three stores at the street level: Moxie Clothing,  Arrowhead Motorcycle Apparel & Supplies, and Harwood Hair Salon. The Teske's Jewelry space is currently empty and ready for a new tenant. Upstairs there is a law office. See the gallery for photos of the stores and open office spaces.

Each of the storefronts that face Howard Street, Hibbing's main street, has a front and back door and a balcony that overlooks the main floor. The details of each space are as follows:

  • Retail Space 2 is currently occupied by Moxie Clothing. It is 2,975 sq feet and has a large basement.

  • Retail Space 3 is currently occupied by Arrowhead Motorcycle Apparel & Supply.  It is 2,375 sq feet and has a large basement.

  • Retail Space 4 is located on the 4th Avenue side. It is currently occupied by Harwood Hair Salon and it is approximately 580 sq feet.

Office Spaces

There are multiple offices on the top floor of the building. There is also a large shared conference room and two community bathrooms. Every office has large windows with abundant natural light.
